Śiva: The Auspicious One


Śiva (The auspicious one) also known as Mahadeva (The great god) who creates, protects, and transforms the universe as the Supreme Being in Hinduism. He is one deity in Panchayatana puja of the Smarta tradition of Hinduism in the aniconic form of lingam.

Śiva is known as Adiyogi Shiva, who is the god of yoga, meditation, and arts. He is also the top form of Ishvar is unformed, unlimited, unequaled and unchanging absolute Brahman, and eternal soul or self (Atman).

Śiva has both benevolent and fearsome depictions of Shiva:
 • In benevolent aspects, he is Yogi who lives as an ascetic life with wife Parvati and his two children, Ganesha and Kartikeya on Mount Kailash.
• In his fierce aspects, he often illustrated, killing demons.
